Residents of Busia have questioned why Kenya Police Service has not been keen to transfer Base Commander Gerald Gitau to another station.
Gitau has served as traffic boss at the Busia Police Station for close to nine years.
According to locals who spoke to Angaza News, the war against rampant smuggling in the border town of Busia cannot be defeated as long as Gitau is still the area Base Commander given his long stay and his reluctance to fight the illegal trade.
Residents now believe that Gitau has given a blind a eye to the illegal activities and allowed those involved in smuggling a field day as if nothing is happening.
Many senior security officers who have been transferred to Busia in the recent past, have served and later transferred to other counties but still left Gitau at Busia.
Some of the County Commissioners the Base Commander has served under are: Isaiah Nakoru, Mongo Chimwaga, Micheal Tialal, Jacob Narengo and Joseph Kanyiri who has since been transferred to Kwale.
” Nothing will stop us to conclude that Gitau is a darling of smugglers in Busia if nothing is done to stop smmugling”, said an angry local.
Boda boda operators and some of the traffic police officers are not happy with Gitau. “Gitau and Collins Sirumba a police constable are managing the traffic section like their personal property,” said a bodaboda rider who didn’t want to be mentioned for his security.
” PC Collins is too powerful and always hold brief for Gitau, it is high time the two are transferred because they have overstayed in Busia,” another boda boda operator said.
“Some of these smugglers use cars such as Proboxes and Toyota ‘Wish’ which are very notorious on our roads and whenever they approach a road block the road is cleared for them to pass and on a very high speed where even many lives have been lost as a rescult of their reckless driving but nothing is done”, added the bodaboda.
Two weeks ago a young man was knocked down by a speedy probox where he died upon reaching the hospital. Pizer Odongo had just left home to buy mmaterials for his new house he had just started to build when he met his untimely death.
Pizer a 27 years former Kenyatta University student who was working with Image Registras is among young people who have died as a result of this notorious smugglers.
He was the son of Jubilee chairman of Nambale Sub County Wilberforce Odongo. His body was laid to rest at his father’s home in Lwanyange Sublocation in Nambale Sub County of Busia County.
The questions many are asking now are, for how long should a Base Commander serve in one particular station? and who are these powerful people aiding and protecting Gitau’s long stay in Busia who do not want him transferred? or are these powerful people also benefiting from this illegal trade?
