15 police officers attached to Nambale police station and 6 Busia County enforcement officers are set to be charged for assault and causing malicious damage to property.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has said that during the incident the police allegedly lobbed teargas into a private home and seriously assaulted the owner Mr. Benard Orenga his wife and children and other neighbors afterwards.
In a statement signed by the chairperson of IPOA Anne Makori and send to the newsrooms today she said, “in the course of monitoring police enforcement of Covid-19 curfew rules, IPOA learned of an incident that happened on 30th March 2020 at 1915hrs in Nambale town of Busia County,”
She further said that after receiving the complaints from the victims, IPOA immediately launched its own investigations into matter.
Makori said that after completing the investigations and upon independent review and concurrence with the recommendations, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions Mr. Noordin Haji directed that the 15 officers and 6 County enforcement officers attached to Nambale Sub County who were assigned police duties be charged.
She reiterated that additionally, the Ward Commander who led the operations will also be charged with additional offense of negligence in the discharge of duty. The officers are set to take plea on 1st February in Bungoma.
