The powerful voting bloc of the Western Kenya region will officially know their chosen official spokesman and leader at a major rally scheduled for Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega town at a yet to be named date next month.
This has emerged after a team commissioned by the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli officially received a secret sealed report compiled by the team in his office at COTU headquarters in Nairobi.
The team had been commissioned by Mr. Atwoli to traverse the entire former western province region researching from members of the public including councils of elders to find out who was their preferred personality to lead and speak on behalf of the communities of the region.
The region which is dominantly populated by the Luhyia community which is considered the second largest to the Kikuyu of the former Central province followed by the Teso and the Mt. Elgon Maasai wants one of their own to become the country’s next President after the next year’s general elections.
The most critical issues here being that thrice they have played second fiddle by generating three Vice Presidents, the first having been Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi from Vihiga County after being coerced by retired President Daniel Arap Moi to be running mate of President Uhuru Kenyatta at his first attempt to succeed the retired head of state which became a cropper in 2002.
After Mudavadi’s extremely short stint in that position, there followed the late Wamalwa Kijana from Trans Nzoia when retired President Mwai Kibaki floored Uhuru at that year’s elections to become the second head of state from the former Central province.
With yet another short stint following his (Wamalwa’s) death he was replaced by Moody Awori from Busia County who served until after the 2007 general elections when he was trounced in Funyula constituency’s elections where he had dominated its leadership for more than 30 years by a new comer to politics Paul Otuoma that saw Kalonzo Musyoka replace him as V.P in the Grand Coalition government of Raila Odinga and Kibaki.
Finally the fact that the former Western province with its huge voting bloc has over the decades been used as a hunting ground for decisive votes that catapulted virtually every president that has ruled this country to power and the region’s interests consigned to oblivion.
Indeed it is from this background that a desperation for the region’s unity and consolidated bloc voting that apparently catapulted the wealthy and powerful COTU boss who also hails from the region to search for a popular preferred personally who cuts across its diverse ethnic divide to execute that dream.
The sealed secret report according to Mr. Atwoli shall remain sealed and securely kept in a secret safe with the Kenya Commercial Bank until the day when it will be officially opened at the planned December public rally at Bukhungu stadium attended by people from all over the province and Members of the Luhyia community from all over the country.
The secrecy of the report echoes that of the post 2007 general elections violence Waki report with an envelope with secret names of suspects believed to have masterminded, financed and executed the deadly violence that resulted in the deaths of more than 1200 Kenyans.
Immediately after the report was handed over to Mr. Atwoli in a ceremony attended by among others the Chairman of the Western Province Members of Parliament caucus John Bunyasi, it was handed over to a senior manager of the Kenya Commercial Bank for safe keeping.
This development is happening when President Kenyatta and his opposition nemesis Raila Odinga are scheduled to have major functions in the region this weekend to drum up support for their quest for the Presidency next year.
President Kenyatta is expected to jet into the region on Thursday November 24th and camp there for the entire weekend with scheduled intinerary covering Bungoma and Kakamega counties hot on the heels of his Deputy William Ruto who has scoured the region more than 17 times and gone to the extend of using his financial might to sway the region’s voting populace.
On the other hand Raila will be camping in Kakamega’s Masinde Muliro University which will be hosting the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Delegates Conference not forgetting the fact that he has also equally scoured the region for support like Ruto.
That is especially after he faced rebellion from the former ODM Vice Chairman Funyula’s Paul Otuoma and his Budalangi constituency’s neighbour and Secretary General Ababu Namwamba who has since acrimoniously defected to the Labour Party of Kenya (LPK) under highly questionable circumstances that implicated the DP Ruto.
