Mumias Sugar On The Spot As Farmers Appeal To Uhuru

Sugarcane farmers contracted to Mumias sugar company and whose money the miller has been holding to close to one year will have to wait a little longer before they are paid.

According to a source within the Company whose identity we cannot reveal, the management is unable to share the Ksh500 million released by President Uhuru Kenyatta amongst thousands of farmers and workers who have gone without pay for over five months.

During his campaign tour of Western region a week before the general elections, the President while addressing wananchi in Mumias gave firm instructions that the money should used only to pay farmers and not staff’s or contractors.

“This money that I am giving out today should only be used to pay our farmers and no one else”, Uhuru said adding that his government would not sit back and watch as farmers suffered.

The source said that the management is between a rock and a hard place since the money given by the President is not enough.

“I can tell you for sure that if Mumias sugar does not receive more funds then we should forget about it as it is headed to a total collapse”, the source said.

Samson Wekesa a farmer in Matungu appealed to the President to intervene so that they can be paid in order to pay school fees for their children who are reopening next week.
