The former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya and Lagdera Constituency MP Farah Maalim Mohamed, has decamped from ODM to Kalonzo’s Wiper Democratic Movement where he will serve as the Deputy Party Leader.
Hon Maalim who has almost twenty years of experience in Kenyan politics was elected to represent the Lagdera Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in the 10th Kenyan Parliament on ODM ticket in 2007. He had previously served in the 7th Kenyan Parliament.
Faarah Maalim has been an ODM die hard and a member of ODM disciplinary committee, He even recently chaired the committee that sought to discipline members who had decamped from ODM among them Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba, who is now the Labour Party of Kenya (LPK) party leader, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani and Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi.
The affected MPs included Mathare’s Steven Kariuki, Mpuri Aburi (Tigania East), Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North) Mustafa Iddi (Kilifi South) and Cyprian Kubai (Igembe Central), Nominated MP Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town), John Waluke (Sirisia), Isaac Mwaura and Kwale Woman Representative Zainab Chidzuga.
Our sources in Garissa town say Hon Maalim has been forced by prevailing political circumstances in Garissa county. Maalim belongs to the Auliyahan sub-clan of the Ogaden Darod Somali clan which is the largest clan in the county and produced the Governor Nathif Jama Adam and Women Representative Shukran Hussein Gure who were both elected on Wiper ticket in 2013 elections.
In the 2013 elections, Maalim ran for the Garissa County Senate seat, but was defeated by TNAs Yusuf Haji. The Auliyahan clan has Maalim asked to decamp and join other leaders from Garissa so that they can be elected on the same ticket.
He will be going against Aden Duale for Garissa Township MP Seat in 2017. The former Lagdera Constituency legislator has been supporting the idea of ODM leader Raila Odinga handing the presidential button to Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka with ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi as his Deputy for the 2017 Presidential race.
