They manufacture self serving intrigues. They scheme and plot to line their tattered pockets. They tell lies, manufacture and execute through hirelings deadly disruptive violence to vindicate their failures to serve their masters’ interests to account for the monies received.
They manufacture dangerous propaganda to enslave and hold whole communities at ransom only for personal benefit as the communities are relegated to forever
degenerating poverty levels – their only economic backbones and lifelines shattered to smithereens hence ‘siasa mbaya maisha mbaya’ (bad politics bad livelihoods).
These are the traitors and saboteurs of the so much craved for unity of the western Kenya region that has been elusive for decades since independence, but as at the end of last year exactly on December 31st, 2016 highly viable and reachable. On that august historic date made possible by the Secretary General of the powerful Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Francis Atwoli, it clearly emerged that there were traitors and saboteurs of that so much craved and fought for but elusive unity to make a powerful political voting bloc of the region.
Even before the august date came to pass, the same characters had come out publicly questioning, deriding and pouring ice cold water on what Atwoli had done whose contents were still a highly guarded secret locked away in a secret vault at one of Kenya’s largest commercial Banks waiting for December 31st to be made public in full view of the members of the targeted communities.
These are the traitors whose deadly theatrics have for decades denied the high stakes office of the Presidency for decades as the region’s interests for the same are relegated to play second fiddle while their votes are every electioneering year exploited to elevate others to occupy the highest office in the land of Kenya.
Interestingly with total irony the fact remains that the three communities from the region the Luhyias, the Teso and the sabaots populations have the second largest numbers in the country second only to the Kikuyu’s of Central Kenya – therefore a very powerful vote bloc if it were not perpetually always fractured by those desiring to harvest from the tattered fractures.
The end result speaks for itself that since independence the Kikuyu of central Kenya have bagged the Presidency three times with the first being the founding father of the nation the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, followed by retired President Mwai Kibaki who defeated the current President at the 2002 general election to succeed retired President Daniel Arap Moi and now the Late Kenyatta’s son President Uhuru Kenyatta.
All these Presidents have been beneficiaries of the fractious voting bloc of the former Western province and this year President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto expect to harvest from the same and that explains why they (particularly Ruto) have been making persistent forays to the region with huge amounts of cash to dispense to individuals.
However the biggest lie has been commissioning or opening up of development projects like the throw away sale of the multi-billion shillings Pan-Paper manufacturing plant to a competitor who was instrumental to its collapse the Jaswant Rai Group and the bailout of the tattered giant Mumias Sugar Company crippled by the same Rai Group with loans and not waivers of these firms’ debts as was the case with coffee farmers in central Kenya.
It has already emerged that before Atwoli embarked on the search for the region’s spokesman he consulted widely with the personalities from the region including virtually all the councils of elders found in all the counties found in the region that is Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga and Trans Nzoia not only in Nairobi but right on the ground and other locations.
Unlike the spokespersons of other communities in the country, the choice of Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi was scientifically conducted by professionals from the University of Nairobi involving 2500 respondents from the western Kenya region – the result Mudavadi beat Ford Kenya’s Senator Moses Wetangula and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
Wetangula has since publicly come out to trash this effort claiming that the spokesman of the region would be a puppet, but totally fails to say whose puppet, then what about the Gikuyu Embu and Meru Association (GEMA), the KAMATUSA outfits whose so called spokesmen are merely imposed on those communities.
The personalities from the western Kenya region who have since exposed themselves as saboteurs and traitors to the unity of the communities from the region are led by wetangula who has declared to vie for the Presidency but from county that is extremely compromised by the Jubilee operatives that is Bungoma complete with its Governor.
The others are Kakamega senator Bonny Khalwale, facing extremely treacherous grounds in his quest to wrest Oparanya from the county’s Governorship, Musikari Kombo from Bungoma, Noah Wekesa, Eugene Wamalwa, Benjamin Washiali, David Were, Ken Lusaka, Ababu Namwamba, Cyrus Jirongo, Moses Akaranga, Sospeter Ojaamong among others.
The historic Bukhungu Declaration move being the very first ever tangible decisive action to unite the western Kenya voting bloc is already sending powerful tremors among the Jubilee operatives because it could easily consign them into a one term Presidency – especially since Mudavadi masterminded the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition to include opposition coalition of Cord led by Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Wetangula.
If the Western Kenya bloc is tightly sealed combined with the other blocs from Nyanza, Rift Valley divided between Deputy President Ruto on one side and Governor Isaack Rutto combined with Senator Gideon Moi on the other, Coast, Eastern shared, Nairobi and North Eastern consolidated together against Jubilee then President Kenyatta will definitely be in trouble with his Deputy.
For the western Kenya region what is clear is that the saboteurs of the unity may have just dug themselves into political oblivion as Lugari legislator Ayub Savula warned at the historic event that such politicians were headed for political doom despite the cash handouts they are believed to have been given by Jubilee operatives.
Indeed many have condemned the so called Luyha, Teso and Sabaot unity and the installation of Mudavadi as the community’s spokesperson. Names have been dropped and everything said about Atwoli’s envelope contents even before they were made public and thereafter.
There is nothing wrong with Mulembe nation having a Kingpin. History reminds all of us of KAMATUSA and GEMA community outfits that were looked as voting blocs during Kibaki and Moi regimes and even championed for representation in government appointments.
The Constitution and in particular Article 36 which guarantees the freedom of all to “form, join or participate in the activities of an association of any kind.” These recent events have made communities of western Kenya region look further into Mulembe nations honey jar as both Cord and Jubilee have been dipping their fingers for a taste into this very jar for years but may now be blocked.
It’s true the Luhya, Teso and Saboat unity horse has an experienced jockey, Mudavadi served in different capacities in both Moi and Kibaki regimes as a senior cabinet minister and even as a Vice President. In 2013 he even tried his stint at the presidency finishing third behind Uhuru and Raila to – this gave him an upper hand and better CV than the likes of Wetangula, Wamalwa, Oparanya would not match.
Mulembe people being democratic 100℅ support was not expected. But then here is where we get shivers of whether this unity will hold any water. It is said that to cross a river as a crowd crocodiles won’t eat you.
During Mudavadi’s coronation one third of Luhya nation was absent, after falling out with Atwoli’s mode of picking the spokes person. The Bukusu have always been lukewarm and have a long time supremacy battle with Maragolis since Masinde Muliro and Mudamba Mudavadi’s days. They always go against the grain and never read from the same script with the rest of the Mulembe nation at every general election. Masinde Muliro descendants command a total of 650,000 votes from the total 1,800,000 luhya basket coming from their 12 constituencies. It is the largest block in western Kenya. Just like a puzzle you wouldn’t want to lose that big piece that would complete the jigsaw puzzle. This one third of the Luhya cookie should worry so much the brains behind Lichomo given the fact Jubilee flanked by its fat wallet has been romancing the Bukusu vote and if we go by history Bukusus don’t vote in unison with the rest of Mulembe nation.
It was also evident that a number of Luhya MPs from Kakamega, Bungoma and Vihiga counties skipped the event, others like Ababu who at one time was seen championing for Mulembe conscious has already been compromised by Jubilee this hiccups should give Atwoli and now Mudavadi sleepless nights.
From where we seat Mulembe nation is yet to deserve a seat at the national dinner table, The Ugali it was to bring on the table is not yet ready and as the African proverb says if you want to go quickly go alone but if you want to go further go together.
