Excitement and massive blanket anticipation has gripped the residents of the former Western province counties as they gear themselves up for a historic announcement at a historic event scheduled for Kakamega town’s Bukhungu stadium.
The preparations for the event scheduled for December 31st, 2016 to mark the end of the year and beginning of the tumultuous and hectic electioneering new year of 2017 have been going on for more than a year although the date was only recently revealed to the public.
The principal personality behind the entire process that culminates into the Bukhungu gathering, the Central Organization of Trade Unions’ (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli is making history by spearheading the search for the Spokesman and leader of the communities residing in the region.
Since independence the communities have been considered a fractious lot without a spokesman and intact unity to vote as a bloc thus being relegated to a mere harvesting ground for its populous vote that has over the decades catapulted President of the previous regimes into power – especially retired Presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.
Indeed it is from this background that many leaders from the region have cried out for the unity of the communities living in the former western region to determine their own political destiny but without tangible aggressive steps to achieve this so much craved for goal.
Taking the challenge into his stride Atwoli through his own expense commissioned a highly powerful team of professionals led by Dons of top public universities to conduct a comprehensive intensive and all round research study to determine from the region’s people’s own mouths and desires their preference of a personality from the region who could take that mantle.
Though the compiled report of the study was completed and officially handed over to Mr. Atwoli accompanied by leaders from the region at his COTU headquarters in Nairobi in October/November 2016.
The Members of Parliament from the region were represented at the handing over of the sealed report by the Chairman of the Western Kenya Parliamentary Caucus, John Sakwa Bunyasi who was accompanied by other legislators from the region including Senators and prominent personalities.
The contents were kept secret exactly like the Waki secret envelope that was handed over to the International Criminals Court (ICC) by mediator Kofi Anan following the 2007/08 post general elections violence in which more than 1,200 were killed and hundreds of thousands injured and displaced – the contents will be revealed on December 31st, 2016 at Bukhungu stadium.
It is the findings of this study and which personality the majority of peoples of the region settled for what criteria was used and what it portends for the political destiny of the region considering the fact that it has the second largest voting bloc and population in the country if not fractured.
Already the beneficiaries of the fractured western Kenya bloc like President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy have been totally shaken with this move which is likely to face a lot of opposition especially from Jubilee through infiltration and execution of spirited maneuvers and manipulations to fracture it from within because it’s united and with a voice, this will be a formidable political force with its tyranny of numbers.
To unveil the findings Atwoli has single handedly organized for leaders right from the grassroots and ordinary wananchi from all the four counties of the region Busia, Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia to grace the historic occasion.
The microscopic eyes of the region’s residents are particularly focusing on the possible personalities one of whom may emerge the winner of the study findings that is particularly Musalia Mudavadi of the Amani National Congress (ANC) who at the last general elections was betrayed and dumped by President Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto in the contest for the Presidency at the last general elections.
Musalia Mudavadi & Moses Wetangula
The other personality is Moses Wetangula of Ford Kenya who has also declared interest in vying for the Presidency at the next general elections, but whose followers largely are from Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties from the Bukusu community most of whom have been compromised to join the un-reliable Jubilee party.
These include seasoned political personalities such as former cabinet ministers and Ford Kenya leader Musijkari Kombo, Dr. Noah Wekesa new comers like cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Bungoma County Governor Ken Lusaka, who compose the only miniscule group of dissent on the ground where they had lost popularity as witnessed with the thrashings they got at the last general elections by their opponents.
Apart from these two personalities, there’s apparently no other high ranking personality who may be considered tops in the study considering the mood with the electorate on the ground, but whose desire is to turn tables this time round rather than playing second fiddle as witnessed once through Mudavadi as Vice President, followed by the late Wamalwa Kijana and finally Moody Awori.
Perhaps apart from the late Masinde Muliro, Wamalwa and the late Moses Mudamba Mudavadi there is no other leader who has ever tried to consolidate the unity of the region, specifically through a scientific study gathering the peoples’ won views, desires and preferences and why.
Though most of the Western Kenya counties are considered Cord dominated areas, it becomes a highly deadly powerful voting bloc with the ANC and Ford Kenya joining the Cord coalition in the National Super Alliance coalition dubbed ‘NASA’ that is already sending shock waves throughout the Jubilee hierarchy with the most feared personality being Mudavadi.
That is why emissaries have been sent to Mudavadi to avoid Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula in their quest to make the Uhuruto administration a one term administration.
This has since been crowned by threats from a well known jubilee hireling and political ruble-rouser from the region in the name of Stanley Livondo who was picked from the streets of Kakamega town to start issuing threats publicly to disrupt the planned December 31st 2016 big event for western Kenya.
